TARGET AUDIENCE: New Dog Owners
LEARNING/TRAINING
OBJECTIVES:
- Over the course of eight weeks new pet owners will
learn the following:
- How to create a wiki
- Anatomy and first aid for your dog
- Basic dog training theory
- How to choose the proper equipment needed for training
- Dog behavior
- Basic obedience strategies and commands
MATERIAL NEEDED:
Handouts, Articles, Computer, Internet Access, Wiki page, YouTube Videos
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE:
Over the eight weeks the
class will have practical work with their pet and class instruction. Reading assignments, worksheets, videos and
wiki posts will be assigned throughout the course. During the first week of class, the students will be broken up into groups. If possible, the groups will be divided according to similar breed or size of their dog. These groups will work together during classroom and training instruction as well during all wiki assignments. Each group will have their own wiki page to add to throughout the course.

EVALUATION:
- Evaluation is based on attendance and wiki posts
and self evaluation for a total of 100 points
- Attendance is worth 5 points/week = 40 points
- Wiki posts are worth 5 points/week = 40 points

Wiki Post Grading Rubric will be used on a five point scale
- A wiki self evaluation and personal reflection
will be completed by each student = 20 points
I chose to primarily use group summaries
for the wiki assignments as it serves multiple purposes. For instructors a “summary is an effective
tool to gauge student comprehension of a particular reading or resource” (West
& West, 2009, p. 73). For students, the
summaries, lessons learned and advice from fellow students was shared throughout
the wiki. This can be used as a
comprehensive resource that each member will have access to and can continue to
build on long after the course is over.

Very interesting topic, Karyn. Based on the training objectives you developed, your plan does fall into the knowledge construction domain. Your instruction as well as learning activities for each week are clear. Well done.
ReplyDeleteBut one thing that's not clear to me is that you said in the last paragraph: "I chose to primarily use group summaries for the wiki assignments..." Well, that information seems to be unclear in your overall training plan. If you plan to have them train their dogs in groups and work on wiki in groups, you may want to be clearer about it in your plan. For example, set up groups in Week 1? More information on how you would expect them to work on wiki as a group through the whole training session would be helpful for trainees to prepare their own schedule.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic lesson plan!!! It is so cute and engaging!. The first item that caught my attention was the doggy picture. They all look wonderful. I love the black poodle who is holding up her paw. If I was an external reader, this picture alone would cause me to investigate your wiki. The title would be the second reason. I think all dog pet owners want their pet to be obedient; however, if you are a new owner, you might not have the knowledge base or training to achieve the desired outcome.
Your class outline and method is just amazing: Clear, direct, and interactive. I love the hyperlinks to the YouTube videos and the red bold font directing students to needed instruction in the learning activity. According to West and West (2009), "A wiki is an excellent tool for sharing information and building a knowledge base" (p. 32). Your wiki has definitely contributed to my knowing more about obedience methods, techniques, and strategies for dogs. Well done!!!!

I have never created a lesson plan before, so I actually kept checking on your blog this week to see what you would come up with! It means a lot to me that you think I did an OK job on this! I really hate asking for help (to a fault – I know) and it made me feel a little better knowing that you were worried about this assignment too You are right, wikis are a great tool, but I think these blogs have been really great at sharing information too. This class is so creative and has posted such great ideas!

ReplyDeleteI thought your lesson plan was very solid and your oultine was EXCELLENT!. I do have a question for you, What do you think is the most critical and important aspect of a good lesson plan and why? One aspect you might want to think about is incorporating the use of Bloom's taxonomy as you write your learning outcomes and objectives. Then when it comes time to create a rubric, this becomes easier because you have outlined your "learning road map" with the student learning outcomes. I hope that made sense. :) Good work!!

Hi Tom, Thank you for your comments! I believe one of the most important aspects of a lesson plan is clarity. If you are not clear on your intent, it will likely cause students to be frustrated and nobody wants that! Thank you for the steer about Bloom's taxonomy. I did a quick google search on him and his classification of learning objectives. I know it will come in handy in my next curriculum development course.

I got thinking about the upcoming course in Designing Curriculum. One of the most helpful pieces I learned in that class for addressing objectives was Mager’s strategy for objective statements. Dean (2002) states that “Objective statements are often begun with the phrase, “learners will be able to” (LWBAT). If a specific behavior, condition, and criterion can be added to the LWBAT, then a complete and precise objective will result” (p. 78). I noticed you had some great LWBAT in your class activities (list, summarize and describe).
Under your major Learning and Training Objective section, you note that students will learn dog behavior. If you had to revise under Mager’s LWBAT. How would restate that objective? Learners will be able to (???) in reference to dog behavior? Describe, Assess, Evaluate???

ReplyDeleteI loved reading the topic and course outline! I know this wasn't part of the assignment, but what if people can not train their dogs in groups? My sister has a small dog that hates other dogs. She wants to see if she can break her of that, but she is so afraid of lessons because of her aggressive behavior. I have not developed much curriculum either, nor had to do lesson plans. I can relate to Dr. K's statement above about changing the syllabus. I have changed my syllabi in every class after each time I have taught it. Some things have worked well and some have been total failures. I have been taken advantage of and changed grading scales even. I was really nervous about this assignment and I too also looked at many others who had their posted early, so you were not alone :)

DeleteThank you for your comments! I'm glad I wasn't the only one nervous about this assignment. It took me a while to figure out what kind of content I was going to use. Dogs are my passion, so once I decided to use dog training as a topic, everything was a lot easier.
I have two german shepherds and I've done extensive group and one on one training with both of them, but by no means am I an expert trainer. Your sister's dog would probably benefit from group training only because it does make things easier if your dog can learn to get along with other dogs. When a dog has behavior issues, it causes a lot of stress for the dog and the owner. She would probably just have to put a muzzle on her dog until she gets better at interacting with other dogs.

ReplyDeleteAll I can say is WOW! That is a fantastic lesson plan. I think that your plan has hit every single important issue needed to complete this assignment. I liked how you broke down each particular important issue into their own segment such as the how to heal, sit and down commands. For a dog trainer those are important issues that need to be known. In week 1 discussion of what needs to be placed in a dog first aid kit is something as an animal owner I really never thought of considering that I have all kinds of different first aid/trauma kits at home for humans.
The additional references and videos are also very impressive. Again, you did a great job on your assignment
